Hello & welcome to this weekβs Weekday Wisdom,
Time for a wonderful story about pricing strategy.π
Shortly after World War II, a legendary gem dealer named Salvador Assael found himself stuck with a massive inventory of black Tahitian pearls.
At the time, the consumer market had no interest in them.
Traditional pearl buyers saw them as ugly, strange anomalies, and Assael couldnβt sell them.
Instead of slashing his prices to get rid of them, Assael pulled off a masterclass in psychological engineering.
He took his black pearls to his close friend, Harry Winston, the owner of a famously expensive jewellery store in New York.
Assael persuaded Winston to place the black pearls directly inside the front window display, positioned next to an incredibly expensive strand of flawless diamonds, rubies, and emeralds.
Simultaneously, Assael placed full-page ads in high-end luxury fashion magazines, showcasing his black pearls alongside the worldβs most exclusive gems, each stamped with an astronomical price tag.
The strategy worked perfectly.
Wealthy socialites looked at the window display and automatically assumed that if the black pearls were sitting next to such expensive jewels, they must be exceptionally rare and valuable.
Assael had created a booming luxury market for an object that had been practically worthless.
Itβs a fabulous example of Anchoring Bias.
When our minds are forced to estimate the value of something unknown, we do not calculate it in absolute terms.
Instead, we latch onto the first piece of numerical information we see (the βanchorβ) and adjust our expectations accordingly.
Itβs a reminder that βvalueβ is determined to a great extent by context.
Key Takeaways:
1. Drop the First Anchor: When entering a salary negotiation or a business contract, try to state your ideal price first to establish the psychological anchor for the discussion firmly.
2. Question Discounts: When looking at a product on sale for Β£50 down from Β£200, recognise that the Β£200 figure is an artificial anchor designed to make you feel the current price is an absolute steal.
3. Establish Premium Pricing: If you are a freelancer or business owner, always offer an elite pricing option; it acts as an anchor that makes your mid-tier options look affordable.
