It’s easy to think that play is the opposite of work, but it’s a critical part of any creative endeavour. Silliness is what helps you get past the obvious ideas. The Muppet workshop was famously chaotic and full of laughter, yet it consistently produced brilliant episodes.
2. Collaborate With The Best
Henson never worked alone. He worked closely with his wife, surrounded himself with brilliant eccentrics like Frank Oz, and built an environment where the best idea always won, regardless of who suggested it.
3. Use Limitations As Fuel
Television frames are small and restrictive. Instead of fighting this, Henson used the edge of the camera frame as his puppet stage, freeing him to move around the studio and create dynamic, cinematic shots that no one else had thought of. A visual constraint helped him revolutionise an industry.
The lesson?
Play is a seriously underestimated component of innovation. It's why a child-like approach to problem-solving is so important.
Traditional puppeteers might have dismissed Jim Henson’s early creations as unsophisticated because they failed to see the advantages of being able to manipulate the puppet with greater precision. But his lighthearted approach made his characters much more lovable.
